Refugee Engagement Activities Strengthen Inclusion in Lira City

Dialogue Engagement with Refugee Leaders and City Officials
On 20th May 2026, the SAIC team organized a dialogue meeting that brought together refugee leaders, youth representatives, and city officials to discuss progress and opportunities for strengthening refugee integration within the host community.
During the engagement, participants reflected on key achievements registered from previous discussions and advocacy efforts. Some of the notable successes highlighted included:
Establishment of a refugee desk to improve coordination and support services
Regulation of water and power bills for refugee households
Normalization of school fees to ensure refugee learners are charged fairly alongside other students
Strengthened collaboration between refugee and host communities
The meeting was attended by representatives from the Mayor’s Office, the Deputy RCC, and the Senior Community Development Officer (CDO), who appreciated the continued efforts of GLOFORD Uganda in fostering inclusion, dialogue, and community integration.
Integrated Life Skills and Cultural Exchange Workshop
On 21st May 2026, the SAIC team conducted an integrated life skills training and cultural exchange workshop for urban refugees living within Lira City. The workshop aimed to promote understanding, unity, and peaceful coexistence between refugee and host communities through dialogue and shared learning experiences.
One of the key areas of discussion focused on cultural values and traditions that unite both communities. Participants from the South Sudanese refugee community and the host Lango community engaged in group discussions and presentations, sharing various cultural practices and traditions.
Some of the cultural aspects highlighted included:
- Naming ceremonies during childbirth
- Cultural practices marking transition into adulthood
- Marriage traditions, including dowry payment
- Family and community values that promote social cohesion
The workshop was enriched by keynote presentations from cultural leaders representing both the refugee and host communities, as well as the lead facilitator, who provided deeper insights into the importance of preserving culture while promoting inclusion and mutual respect.
