Learning from Our Lord Jesus and Saviour: Lessons for Contemporary and Future Leaders
By Dr. Morris Chris Ongom, Chief Executive Officer, GLOFORD Uganda
Introduction
In a world marked by leadership crises, corruption, inequality, and short-sightedness, the life and leadership of Jesus Christ provide an eternal template for transformative, value-based leadership. He didn’t lead from thrones, wealth, or military power—but through love, truth, and service. The model of Christ remains not only spiritually profound but also socially revolutionary, offering direction for every leader—now and in the future.
- Servant Leadership: Leading from below
“The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…” — Matthew 20:28
Jesus washed His disciples’ feet. He associated with the poor. He rejected power games. His leadership flipped the pyramid—placing the servant at the top.
Takeaway: Leadership is not about position; it’s about purpose. True leaders lift others up and serve sacrificially.
- Purpose-driven vision
“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me…” — John 4:34
Jesus stayed mission-focused. Every teaching, healing, and journey aligned with God’s plan.
Takeaway: Leaders must anchor their mission in higher, kingdom-centered vision—not ego, trends, or ambition.
- Compassion as a Leadership Value
“When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them…” — Matthew 9:36
Jesus felt the pain of the people. His miracles weren’t just for show—they were born from deep empathy.
Takeaway: Leadership without compassion is cold and transactional. Let your heart break for what breaks God’s heart.
- Mentorship and Multiplication
“Come, follow me…and I will send you out to fish for people.” — Matthew 4:19
Jesus intentionally mentored 12 disciples. He trained and released them. The church today is the fruit of that strategy.
Takeaway: Great leaders build people, not empires. Mentor. Multiply. Let your legacy outlive you.
- Courage to speak the truth
“Woe to you, teachers of the law…!” — Matthew 23
Jesus confronted corruption and hypocrisy with holy boldness.
Takeaway: Leaders must resist compromise and speak truth to power—graciously but firmly.
- A Life of prayer and intimacy
“Very early in the morning…Jesus went off to pray.” — Mark 1:35
Jesus constantly reconnected with the Father. Prayer was His source of wisdom and strength.
Takeaway: Your private walk fuels your public work. Prayer isn’t optional—it’s essential.
- Grace, Forgiveness, and Reconciliation
“Father, forgive them…” — Luke 23:34
Even in death, Jesus forgave. His leadership reconciled humanity to God.
Takeaway: Lead with grace. Heal broken systems. Be a bridge, not a barrier.
