Health, Skills, and Empowerment Shine at International Youth Day Celebration in Lira

On International Youth Day, Uganda Martyrs University, Ngetta Campus, became a hub of energy and empowerment as youth from Lira and neighboring regions gathered for a day filled with health services, skills development, and inspiring messages from local leaders. The event, organized in partnership with organizations like GLOFORD Uganda, GWED-G, and Caritas Switzerland, aimed to raise health awareness among young people through essential services such as HIV/AIDS testing, circumcision, and reproductive health education.

The day began with a strong focus on health, recognizing the critical role it plays in the lives of young people. Various partners provided free medical services, offering the youth an opportunity to safeguard their health. Participants engaged in blood testing, received information on reproductive health, and were encouraged to take proactive steps towards living healthier lives.

Prominent leaders from the Lira City Council attended the event, delivering messages that emphasized the importance of youth engagement, accountability, and development. Hon. Haggard Oluma, the Youth Councillor, highlighted the need for dialogue with schools to address the growing issue of student strikes. He also spoke about the government’s commitment to supporting young people, urging them to actively participate in government programs that provide resources and opportunities. “Apply for youth councilors to determine allocation of resources,” Oluma advised, stressing the importance of leadership and accountability in shaping a better future for the youth.
 
Mayor of Lira City East Division, Okello Ayoo George, echoed the theme of the celebration, “Skills Development,” by urging the youth to prioritize their health, enhance their creativity, and pursue education. He emphasized the vast potential that the youth possess, encouraging them to nurture their talents and actively participate in government programs designed to support their development. “You have immense creativity and talent,” he told the youth, “and it is up to you to harness it and contribute to the growth of your communities.”
 
Proscovia Ayoo, Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC), shared a heartwarming message about the positive impact of youth mentoring programs. She expressed her pride in seeing the young people she has mentored take responsibility for their health, particularly through blood testing, and encouraged them to continue setting good examples for others. “I am happy that they have changed their ways,” Ayoo said, reflecting on the progress made by the youth. She reminded them to always strive to be role models in their communities, leading by example in both their actions and choices

The event also featured testimonials from participants, including one from Ogweng Thomas, who shared his personal commitment to staying healthy. He urged his fellow youth to be mindful of their lifestyle choices, prioritize regular health checkups, and ensure that those who are unwell receive the necessary medical care. “It is important to mind your health and take care of yourselves,” Thomas cautioned, reminding the youth that their health is their most valuable asset.

Hon. Odongo Steven, Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) of Lira City East Division, delivered a powerful closing message, calling on organizations to ensure that the youth are empowered to embrace the opportunities available to them. He encouraged the youth to participate in government programs and emphasized the importance of understanding their values, morals, and contributions to nation-building. “Help them understand their values, morals, and historical contributions in terms of nation-building, climate change, and socio-economic transformation,” he urged, highlighting the crucial role that young people play in shaping the future of Uganda.

The International Youth Day celebration at Uganda Martyrs University, Ngetta Campus, was a resounding success. With a focus on health, skills development, and youth empowerment, the event served as a reminder of the potential that lies within Uganda’s youth and the importance of supporting them as they lead the way towards a brighter future.
